The Siemens Software Usability Center has a fully-equipped lab, furnished with video cameras, audio, and playback systems. Team members can observe users working with prototypes and pre-release software, as well as with mature products.

Usability testing contributes to the understanding of cognitive, perceptual, and physical barriers found within user interfaces.

In Siemens' lab, a control deck allows the team to witness users reacting to software as they navigate the interface and attempt to perform normal tasks. Separate cameras record facial expressions and comments, use of manuals, and activity on the screen itself. As a rule, every session is recorded and held for later review and analysis.
Because positive and negative reactions are recorded, user centered design allows prototypes to speak for themselves, shrinking paperwork to a minimum. Communication, in effect, occurs naturally through participation.
