ATLANTA — Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. announced today that it has won a contract to work with Aylward Enterprises, LLC, a global pharmaceutical packaging company headquartered in New Bern, N.C., on the design of its new ACT 9000 Series Bottle Filler.
Aylward bottle filling machines are known not only for their impressive throughput, but also for their supreme accuracy in tablet integrity detection and counting. The Siemens controls on the ACT 9000 will increase the accuracy of pharmaceutical tablet measurements by 10 fold, and decrease the time required between measurements which will enhance these features. The system will also have unparalleled throughput for the cost.
The ACT 9000 is unique because it has a simplified mechanical design, reducing the number of components and overall machine costs as well as simplifying and shortening changeover tasks. After the successful completion of this project, Aylward plans to phase Siemens controls products into much of its standard equipment in the future because of its capabilities in motion control and reduced costs over competitors along with superior global support.
“We have chosen Siemens because they provide us with a scalable solution over the same software platform from our smallest blister feed equipment to our new ACT 9000, filling eighteen bottles per index,” said Dana Waterman, CEO, Aylward Enterprises. “In addition to scalability, Siemens will enhance our tablet integrity inspection down to the micro-second with vastly reduced controls cost. In the end this will provide our customers with a lower cost of ownership.”
The scope of the contract includes Siemens Simotion P350 motion controller, Sinamics S120 Booksize Compact drives, 1FK7 servo motors with Alpha planetary gearboxes and ET200S I/O components. The heart of the inspection system will be the Siemens high speed TM17 Sinamics I/O module. Siemens will also supply controls, power distribution and circuit protection components.

Additionally, Siemens and its channel partner CCA will provide on-site training and engineering support during programming, start-up and factory acceptance testing. The two companies will also provide continued product and solution support throughout the life-cycle of the new ACT 9000.
