Siemens' Lorenz to Discuss Advanced Process Control at Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo
ATLANTA -- Dr. Otmar Lorenz, manager of Chemical Industry Technology for Siemens, will discuss improvements in the multi-stage ethanol distillation and milling process today during the “Advanced Process Controls: Taking APC to the Next Level” panel discussion at the 23rd Annual International Fuel Ethanol Workshop & Expo being held at the America’s Center in St. Louis, June 26-29. Lorenz will also present an “Overview of Embedded and External Advanced Control Solutions for the Ethanol Industry.”
“Workshop attendees will learn how advanced ethanol process control provides significant benefits to ethanol producers,” said Dave Hankins, vice president, Chemical and Biofuels Center of Competence, Siemens Energy & Automation, Inc. “By improving the multi-stage distillation process and milling through advanced process control, ethanol plants can significantly lower production costs and reduce the total cost of ownership.”
Industry experts will be available throughout the workshop to demonstrate how advanced process control is making it easier for ethanol producers to implement new technologies with little to no external assistance. Experts will also be available to answer questions about the company’s instrumentation, electrical, automation and water technologies at Siemens booth #321.
Siemens automation technology can be found in over 90 ethanol plants currently operating in the U.S., representing more than 5.2 billion gallons produced annually.

Dr. Otmar Lorenz
Dr. Lorenz is Manager for Chemical Industry Concepts and Technology within the Competence Center in Siemens. He is responsible for industrial initiatives and advanced process control. Lorenz previously worked for Hoechst AG in Frankfurt, Germany, where he ran industrial process control projects for a wide range of chemical processes. His areas of specialization include process modeling, simulation and design, advanced process control, and optimization. Lorenz holds a master's degree in electrical engineering from Karlsruhe Technical University, Germany, and a PhD in mechanical engineering.
