Siemens Introduces New Linear Motor For Machine Tool Applications At IMTS 2008

CHICAGO– Siemens today announced the introduction of a new line of synchronous, brushless linear motors known as the 1FN6 series. These motors are unique to the industry featuring a magnet-free secondary track system and an air-cooled primary section. Combined with the Siemens SINAMICS or SIMODRIVE drive systems, these new motors will produce thrust forces and velocities equivalent to competitive models for light-duty machine tool, machine accessory and material handling applications.

With other synchronous linear motor designs, permanent magnets are imbedded into the secondary track sections. Installation requires strict mounting procedures to ensure safety of personnel and correct alignment. Additionally, the magnet sections have to be protected from ferrous chips and debris that are attracted to the magnets. The patented 1FN6 magnet-free secondary is easy to install and does not require the safety considerations of permanent magnet style secondary track. Without magnets there is no problem with ferrous chips and other debris being attracted to these sections. Maintenance becomes a simple matter of installing a wiper or brush on the moving part of the slide.
