PROFINET Development Kits

The ERTEC 200 PN IO Starter Kit is an addition to our existing product portfolio of PROFINET IO Device Development Kits and is particularly suitable for first-time users of the PROFINET and ERTEC technology. The starter kit can be used to develop and test PROFINET hardware and software for PROFINET IO Device applications with the ERTEC 200 ASIC.

Application

The PROFINET IO Development Kit enables PROFINET IO devices to be created using standard Ethernet ASICs.  The user does not have to create the complete communication software on their own.

Functionality 

The stack is supplied in the source code and can be ported to any hardware and operating system platform.  Necessary adaptations are encapsulated in the defined interfaces to the hardware and operating system, thus enabling the stack to be ported as simply and cost effectively as possible.  A good knowledge of PROFINET IO is required to implement the firmware stack.  See our education and resources links for ways to obtain PROFINET know how.

The PROFINET IO Development Kit includes a development license that authorizes the user to develop and test PROFINET IO devices. After the development has been concluded successfully and the certification process was passed, a product line license is required for series production for each product line.

Application

The ERTEC 200 and 400 Development Kits enables developers of devices to implement a PROFINET IO connection using the specially designed ERTEC 200 ASIC with a built in two port switch (PHYs included) or by using the specially designed ERTEC 400 ASIC with a built in four port switch (PHYs not included).  It includes all components required for the development of a PROFINET IO device with realtime (RT) and isochronous realtime (IRT). A good knowledge of PROFINET IO is required to implement the firmware stack.  See our education and resources links for ways to obtain PROFINET know how.

The complete package consists of: Evaluation Board with ERTEC 200 or ERTEC 400 as PROFINET IO device, PROFINET IO stack for PROFINET IO devices as object code for VxWorks or eCos (free OS), CP 1616 (PCI card) for PROFINET IO controller test partner, NCM PC software package to configure the CP 1616 as engineering system for PN IO Application. The ERTEC 200 and 400 Industrial Ethernet ASICs contain on-chip the functions required for high-performance system solutions in automation. This supports device manufacturers in the implementation of connections for PROFINET IO. At the same time they can use the advantages of the "System on Chip". The DK ERTEC 200 / 400 PN IO Development Kit is available as support for the implementation of the ERTEC 200 and ERTEC 400.  They enables quick development of a PROFINET IO device with realtime and isochronous realtime.

Application

PC Based PROFINET applications are possible through the use of Simatic Softnet PROFINET IO Software, or Communication processors CP 1616 (PCI format) or CP 1604 (PC 104+ format) and the DK 16XX Development Kit.  Applications such as a PROFINET IO Controller and/or IO Device and both RT/IRT modes can be implemented with the built in ERTEC 400 onboard the CP.  For RT communications both Windows and Linux operating system application examples are available.  For IRT, a Real time extension to the operating system is necessary such as RTAI for the Linux Kernel and Linux application examples are available.  A good knowledge of PROFINET IO is required to implement the firmware stack.  See our education and resources links for ways to obtain PROFINET know how.

With the PC Based solutions there are different options depending on your application requirements.  Choose the option you wish below.

Option 1 - PC Based using CP 1616 and DK 16XX (supports IO Controller and/or IO Device)

The CP 1616 allows users to use a PCI slot in the PC and implement high performance PC Based PROFINET applications using the IO Base Programming interface of the DK 16XX.  The CP 1616 with onboard ERTEC 400 and four port switch allows creation of both IO Controller and / or IO Device applications using both modes RT/IRT (dependent on OS). Requirements necessary for this option is a PC with Windows (supports PN RT) or Linux (supports PN RT/IRT), the CP 1616 (PCI format), and the DK-16XX which can be ordered free of charge. Option 3 - PC Based using Simatic Softnet PROFINET IO (supports IO Controller - RT mode only)

Simatic Softnet PROFINET IO gives the user access to either a OPC server or IO Base application programming interface on Windows or Linux using a standard Ethernet card on a PC. With Simatic Softnet PNIO, a PROFINET IO controller application can be written to control IO Devices on a network using PROFINET IO with Real Time (RT). With OPC, the use of any standard OPC Client is possible.  For custom applications, the user can use IO Base programming interface. Requirements for this option is a PC with Windows or Linux, standard network card, and the Softnet PROFINET IO software (see order numbers below and note target operating system for your application).
